History

John’s Lee Wood was purchased in 1946 for the princely sum of £1,375 and opened up to campers in September 1947 after 12 months of hard work by volunteers. Numerous buildings have appeared over the years; The Collier Hut and the Dick & Phil Cabin where the first buildings on the site. The Harry Walker and Alan Gutteridge Cabins came later and more recently the toilet block, shop (The Providor) and The Ray Siggers Cabin, which is the Wardens accommodation.

Over the years the site has been through many changes, although still retains many of the original features and most would say, it’s charm.

More recently a programme of improvement has been implemented including a project to remove many of the dead and diseased trees around the site, clearing new areas for new tree nurseries and activities.

The future is looking good for JLW with plans for more activities and new buildings.

Volunteer With Us

Like many Scout camp sites we are entirely staffed by volunteers and it goes without saying that Johns Lee Wood would not be what it is without the hard work and dedication of ALL the volunteers, past and present.

We have 8 teams on an 8 week rota and a mid-week team who meet every Wednesday. We are constantly on the look out for new volunteers to help us look after our campers and to help take care of our beautiful site. We have the Siggers cabin, the home of the on-site wardens with bunk beds and a cosy log fire when it gets a bit chilly outside.

If you’d like to find out more about joining the team please visit our volunteer page or email us.
