WOOD PILE and FIRES

What to do in the event of a fire emergency

  • If you are in a building, raise the alarm and get out of the building.

  • Phone 999 and ask for the Fire Service - John’s Lee wood Scout Campsite, Markfield Lane, Markfield, LE67 9PS - W3W \\\motivate.cabbies.signed

  • Make your way to the fire assembly point in the car park.

  • If safe to do so, and there are other groups onsite, have an adult ring the fire bell.

  • If Wardens are onsite make them aware there is a fire. If no Wardens are onsite, or you can’t find them, phone 07515480945 (at night phone twice in close succession).

  • Ensure you have a head count of your group. If anyone is missing DO NOT try to find them, this will put yourself and others at risk.

  • DO NOT re-enter site until directed to do so by the Emergency Services, Head warden or Deputy Head warden.

Fires

  • Do not light ground fires on the grass, ground fires are only permitted on a fire slab.

  • Altar fires are to be used on all sites with no fire slab.

  • Altar fires must be on a stand and are not permitted to be placed directly on the ground.

  • Do not empty altar fires on to the site, there is an ash pit next to the wood pile for emptying altar fires into.

  • Do Not leave fires burning unattended.

  • We have altar fires and grids available near the wood pile.

  • Tent stoves/fires are not permitted even in tents designed to take a stove and flue.

  • All fire slabs and altar fires must be cleared of ash when departing. The ash can be taken to the ash pile, all ashes must be cold before going onto the ahs pile.

  • Return all altar fires and grids before departing site.

  • All groups must ensure they have a fire bucket with them in case a fire gets out of hand.

  • Fires on the campfire circle must be kept to a sensible size and not allow to get out of control.

Wood pile and fire wood

  • We have a well stocked wood pile in the middle of the campsite, opposite the toilet block, for all groups to use.

  • Please be aware of the possibility of nails, screws and metal in the woodpile. We recommend the wearing of good quality boots while using the woodpile and supervision by an adult. You are requested to return ALL unused timber to the woodpile.

  • There is plenty of wood around the site which can be used.

  • Trees and branches must not be cut for fire wood.

  • Tree bark must not be stripped to start fires.

  • Any wood taken to sites or the campfire circle must be returned to the woodpile before you depart and not left stacked on the camping pitch or by the campfire circle.

  • No timber containing any form of glue, resin, paint or other man-made substance may be burnt on this campsite. This includes hardboard, chipboard, plywood, mdf, laminates and any other similar types of timber. If in any doubt DO NOT burn it.
